Greensky Bluegrass Celebrates Dave Bruzza’s Birthday In Pittsburgh

Greensky Bluegrass followed a sold-out run of three shows at the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C. by continuing Winter Tour at the Rex Theater in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night. The band was celebrating the occasion of guitarist Dave Bruzza’s birthday as they presented their signature mix of heartfelt originals and intriguing covers.

GSBG kicked off the festivities with a cover of “Shakedown Street” by the Grateful Dead. They would reprise the song later in the night by working teases of “Shakedown” into both the “Worried About The Weather” that closed out the first set and the “Leap Year” that ended the second set. Bill Monroe’s “I’m Working On A Building” was the second song of the night as part of a first set that included originals “Into The Rafters,” “Room Without A Roof,” “Living Over,” “Merely Avoiding,” “Please Don’t Bury Me” and “Worried About The Weather” as well as the previously mentioned covers of the traditional “Jesus On The Main Line.”

The second set saw the crowd sing “Happy Birthday” to honor Bruzza’s birthday. Greensky opened the second set with “Burn Them” and then inserted “Hoxeyville” within “The Four.” Romps through “Train Junkie” and “Past My Prime” were followed by a rendition of Paul Simon’s “Gumboots” and a set-closing sequence of “Hot Dogs (On Parade),” “Reverend” and “Leap Year.” The band said farewell with Van Morrison’s “Into The Mystic” serving an encore. Greensky returns to the Rex on Wednesday night.
