Greensky Bluegrass Covers Black Sabbath With Tom Hamilton & Holly Bowling in Atlanta

Greensky Bluegrass wrapped up their winter tour at The Tabernacle in Atlanta on Saturday night. GSBG welcomed keyboardist Holly Bowling and guitarist Tom Hamilton of opening band Ghost Light for a Black Sabbath cover and more.

Greensky got things underway with “Before Bring Out Your Dead” into “Bring Out Your Dead.” The first set also included “Beauty And Pain” for just the eighth time, as per Phantasy Tour, and the first time since New Year’s Eve 2019. The band then got into a big jam section beginning with “Wish I Didn’t Know” and heading into “Courage For The Road” — from their 2019 album All For Money — which in turn segued into “It’s Not Mine Anymore” before returning to “Courage For The Road.” GSBG closed out the first frame with “Broke Mountain Breakdown” into a cover of the late Eddie Money’s “Two Tickets To Paradise.”

The second began with the classic Paul Hoffman-penned number “Old Barns” followed by the Dave Bruzza-composed “Worried About The Weather.” The biggest bust out of the evening came in the form of The Louvin Brothers “Great Atomic Power,” last played over a year ago. The rarity goes way back for GSBG, debuted in the mid-2000s, but saw a nearly five-year drought between 2009 and 2014 and even after that the song has been played sparingly for a total of 46 times in 15 years. “Murder Of Crows,” The Stanley Brothers’ “Little Maggie” and Bruzza’s “Bottle Dry” came next before the band welcomed Bowling for Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved,” “Past My Prime” and “Living Over” to close out the second set.

Bowling would rejoin GSBG along with Hamilton for the encore which kicked off with Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” followed by “Ain’t No Bread In The Bread Box,” a Norton Buffalo song often covered by Jerry Garcia Band, to close out the evening and the tour.
