Jam In The Sand :: 01.18-22.18 :: Jewel Paradise Cove :: Runaway Bay, Jamaica ::

Grateful Dead tribute act Dark Star Orchestra teamed with Island Gigs to present the sixth installment of Jam In The Sand between January 18 and 22 at Jewel Paradise Cove Resort in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. Not only were attendees treated to four performances from DSO, they also witnessed sets from Hot Tuna and the Rumpke Mountain Boys.

The first night of the event saw Dark Star Orchestra recreate a Grateful Dead show which took place 40 years to the day prior in Stockton, Calfornia. DSO went the “elective” route for the next three nights. On the 19th, rain forced the band indoors which led to an intimate and unusual acoustic performance. The group fit in such rarities as “The Thrill Is Gone,” “It Makes No Difference” and “Chimes Of Freedom” with GD acoustic favorites “Dire Wolf,” “Ripple,” “Uncle John’s Band” and more. Dark Star weaved together one Dead repertoire gem after another on the 20th including “Feel Like A Stranger,” “Hard To Handle,” “Unbroken Chain” and “St. Stephen.” For the finale, the tribute act welcomed Hot Tuna drummer Justin Guip for “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” and the group’s Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen for “Baby What You Want Me To Do,” “Smokestack Lightning” and “White Rabbit.” Members of the Rumpke Mountain Boys added to “Cumberland Blues” in the second set, while Tanya Shylock was among the guests on the “I’ll Be With Thee” encore.

As usual, photographer Suzy Perler was on hand at DSO’s Jam In The Sand and has shared a full gallery of photos from the event:
