Grateful Fred came onto the scene about a year and a half ago after becoming officially licensed by the Grateful Dead. They specialize in high-quality chrome car badges that incorporate designs like the 13-point bolt, the stealie, bears and numerous other classic Grateful Dead designs.
Now they’re bringing fans something completely different – a true one-of-a-kind piece of art: the American Beauty Flag, which was inspired by the Grateful Dead and their strong ties to American culture and history. The American Beauty Flag artwork is being auctioned off with the auction benefiting the nonprofit Pets For Vets®. Pets For Vets® connects America’s veterans with shelter pets by rescuing, training and pairing the companion animals with those who have served in the military.

So… how did this flag come to be?
Grateful Fred started out with one product, a simple 13-point, chrome bolt. There was a lot to learn in the beginning and during their “learning phase,” Grateful Fred accumulated an abundance of bolts that they weren’t comfortable selling due to what some may consider imperceptible defects.
No matter how small the scratch or blemish, Grateful Fred didn’t feel comfortable making a sale without 100% certainty that the purchaser would be happy with the final product.
Long story short, Grateful Fred ended up with a whole bunch of scratch and dent bolts on their hands and they were hell-bent on doing something useful with them. So last summer Grateful Fred made a prototype of the American Beauty Flag out of over 500 red, white (chrome) and blue bolts. Fred shared the prototype with their followers last Fourth of July, generating an overwhelmingly positive response.
That brings us to today…
In the spirit of continuing to produce the highest quality products for Deadheads, Grateful Fred decided to turn all of those red, white and blue lemons into lemonade. So they reached out to Lionheart Framing in Atlanta to see if they could turn the flag concept into a reality. The end result is a show stopping, elegantly framed, one-of-a-kind, badass piece of up-cycled Grateful Dead art.
