The Grateful Dead scored a surprise hit that introduced the band’s music to a whole new generation of fans in 1987 with the studio album In The Dark and its hit single “Touch Of Grey.” Twenty-seven years later the band has another hit on their hands as the live archival release Dave’s Picks Volume 10 has scored the #17 slot on this week’s Billboard Top 200 chart. The #17 slot-score marks the Dead’s highest chart debut since In The Dark.

Dave’s Picks Volume 10 features the Grateful Dead’s December 12, 1969 performance at Thelma in Los Angeles, CA. The new release was limited to 14,000 individually numbered copies, which were all sold during the pre-sale period. Last year, the Dead’s Sunshine Daydream live archival release scored the band a #19 debut. Back in 1987 In The Dark peaked at #6, while “Touch Of Grey,” the band’s only Top 40 hit, reached #9.
