Gov’t Mule Welcomes Charlie Starr For Faces & Stones Covers In Philadelphia

We’re now six shows into Gov’t Mule‘s Smokin’ Mule 2016 Summer Tour with Blackberry Smoke and each show has seen a collaborative encore featuring classic rock gold. The trend continued last night in Philadelphia, where Charlie Starr of Blackberry Smoke came out with Mule for an encore containing a Faces cover and a Rolling Stones cover at Penn’s Landing.
After an opening set from Blackberry Smoke, Gov’t Mule came out of the gates with a cover of “Hammer & Nails” ahead of a run of originals that included “Thelonius Beck,” “Larger Than Life” and “Fool’s Moon.” Later in the set, Warren Haynes & Co. honored Prince with “When Doves Cry.” Mule ended their powerful performances with a “Thorazine Shuffle” > “Funny Little Tragedy” > “Thorazine Shuffle” sequence and “Slackjaw Jezebel.”
Wednesday night’s encore saw Gov’t Mule bring out Charlie Starr for versions of “Stay With Me” by Faces and The Rolling Stones’ “Ventilator Blues.” The tour continues tonight at Stage AE in Pittsburgh.
