Gov’t Mule Welcome Many Guests At Mountain Jam

Mountain Jam host Warren Haynes finally had to chance to lead his own performance on Saturday night, when Gov’t Mule played two marathon sets and a meaty encore at the festival. Mule welcomed seven guests last night over the course of their show, many of which were members of the Tedeschi Trucks Band, who performed on the East Stage before Haynes’ unit closed out the evening.

While the first set was mostly full-on Mule without the help of any guests, we did see a reprise of the Derek Trucks/Gov’t Mule collaboration on Billy Cobham’s “Stratus” that went down at April’s Wanee Festival. The first set also saw Tom Petty’s “Breakdown” worked into “Beautifully Broken” and a version of “Gameface” that included a “Mountain Jam” tease.

Gov’t Mule kicked off the second set with “Mule” before they brought out guitarist Eric Krasno, who had sat in with the Tedeschi Trucks Band earlier in the day, keyboardist Kofi Burbridge and vocalist Susan Tedeschi for a cover of Rufus & Chaka Khan’s “Tell Me Something Good.” Later in the set, Haynes’ trademark “Soulshine” was followed by a mesmerizing cover of Radiohead’s “Creep.” From there, Mule welcomed Jackie Greene to the stage for a one-two punch of “Sugaree” (Grateful Dead) and “Sometimes Salvation” (Black Crowes). The quartet ended the second set with a take on “Tributary Jam” that saw contributions from TTB trombonist Saunders Sermons and trumpeter Maurice Brown. Gov’t Mule put a stamp on Saturday at Mountain Jam with a three-song encore of Doors covers. Mountain Jam concludes today with performances from the Allman Brothers Band, Anders Osborne, Chris Robinson Brotherhood and many more.
