Gov’t Mule Fills Stage With Guests At Second Island Exodus 2017 Show In Jamaica

Island Exodus continued on Sunday at Jewel Paradise Cove in Runaway Bay, Jamaica; where rain led Gov’t Mule to play one long set and two shorter ones instead of their customary two set performance. Warren Haynes & Co. made the most of the other guests on hand with many helping out at various points of the evening.
A string of covers started the show as Mule ran through “And Your Bird Can Sing” (The Beatles), “Just Got Paid” (ZZ Top) and “Rebel Rebel” (David Bowie). The latter was part of the group’s New Year’s Eve tribute to those we lost in 2016. Last night’s first set was also highlighted by a “Game Face” with “Birdland” teasing and a set-closing “Mule” featuring contributions from saxophonist Ron Holloway.
Gov’t Mule’s second set was shortened by rain, but the quartet was able to make it through five songs. Up first was “Mr. High & Mighty” followed by the reggae version of “Steppin’ Lightly.” Then, guitarist Marcus King joined Mule on a cover of “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Warren and the gang then brought out vocalist Nicki Bluhm for covers of The Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses” and “Somebody To Love” by Jefferson Airplane.
The band eventually made it back out for a guest-filled third set. It began with Holloway contributing to “Birth Of The Mule” ahead of the Island Exodus Singers, Island Exodus Horns, Neal Evans, Alan Evans and Jack Ryan helping out on “Flash Light” and “Pass The Peas.” The show came to a close with a take on The Allman Brothers Band instrumental “Mountain Jam” featuring King, Krasno and Ryan. Island Exodus ’17 continues on Monday in Jamaica.
