Gov’t Mule continued a tour of the West Coast with a show Tuesday night at the Roseland Theater in Portland, Oregon. The band offered the live debut of an original song on their just-released studio album and welcomed special guest drummer Tony Coleman to sit-in on a song as well.
Frontman Warren Haynes opened the show with “Mr. Man” followed by a cover of Muddy Waters’ “Streamline Woman.” The third offering of the set was the debut of “Burning Point,” a song Mule recorded with guitarist Jimmy Vaughan on their recently issued studio album Revolution Come … Revolution Go. Later in the set drummer Matt Abts stepped aside for Coleman, a renowned blues musician known for his tenure with B.B. King and others, to join Mule on the blues staple “Need Your Love So Bad.” Mule concluded the set with “Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground” from the new LP and the favorite “Soulshine.”
The second set opened with “Wandering Child” and was filled out with a cover of The Beatles “I’ve Just Seen A Face,” as well as “Pressure Under Fire” coupled with “Thelonious Black” and a “Painted Silver Light” > “Drums” > “Raven Black Night” sequence. The set wrapped with “Thorazine Shuffle” and the encore was the Revolution Come … Revolution Go single “Stone Cold Rage.”
Mule continues their tour tomorrow at Century Center in Bend, Oregon.
