The Smokin’ Mule Summer Tour continued on Friday night near Detroit, where once again Gov’t Mule teamed with members of Blackberry Smoke for a collaborative encore at Meadow Brook Amphitheatre. We’re now eight shows into the run and each encore has featured different classic rock staples.

Gov’t Mule continues to show off their extensive catalog as they fit tour debuts of “Streamline Woman,” “Child Of The Earth” and “Birth Of The Mule” into last night’s first set. The opening stanza ended with the tour’s first cover of CCR’s “Effigy,” which contained a jam on “Folsom Prison Blues” within. Warren Haynes & Co. also treated fans to a series of Beatles covers including “She Said, She Said,” “Tomorrow Never Knows” and their second-ever version of “And Your Bird Can Sing.”

Friday’s second set was also heavy on tour debuts as “No Reward,” “Scared To Live,” “I Think You Know What I Mean,” “When The Levee Breaks” and “Fallen Down” saw action for the first time this run. Staples “Kind Of Bird” and “Blind Man In The Dark” were also part of Mule’s closing stanza. When Gov’t Mule returned for the encore, they had Blackberry Smoke guitarist Charlie Starr and keyboardist Brandon Still with them for a cover of The Band’s “Stage Fright.” Mule debuted the cover back on New Year’s Eve and have played it only two other times since besides last night. Guitarist Paul Jackson then joined Gov’t Mule and his Blackberry Smoke band mates for Mule’s first cover of “Down By The River” by Neil Young since November 1, 2014.
