Gov’t Mule Covers Allman Brothers & ‘That’s What Love Will Make You Do’ With Members Of Blackberry Smoke

We’ve reached the end of the Smokin’ Mule Tour featuring Gov’t Mule and Blackberry Smoke as the two bands go their separate ways after tonight’s show in Jackson, Wyoming. Saturday night’s penultimate show of the run saw a trend of collaborative encores featuring different covers continue at Big Sky Brewery in Missoula, Montana.
Blackberry Smoke opened the evening with a set of their patented southern rock before the Mule took the stage. Warren Haynes & Co. kicked off their 15-song performance with a series of originals including “Blind Man In The Dark,” “World Boss” and “World Gone Wild.” One of the initial surprises of the evening came when Gov’t Mule dusted off their rendition of Jeff Beck’s “Freeway Jam” for the first time in 18 months. The band later worked their own “Beautifully Broken” within a cover of “When Does Cry” by Prince. Mule’s set ended with an inventive “Thorazine Shuffle” > “Funny Little Tragedy” > Thorazine Shuffle” sequence.
For the encore, Gov’t Mule was joined by Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr, Paul Jackson and Brandon Still. Blackberry Mule ended the night with covers of Little Milton’s “That’s What Love Will Make You Do” and The Allman Brothers Band’s “Southbound.” Saturday’s “Southbound” is just the second in Mule history as the band debuted the cover as part of their New Year’s Jam concert this past New Year’s Eve.
