Gov’t Mule Continues Island Exodus With Guest-Filled Night & Warren ‘Q & Play’ Set

Gov’t Mule‘s Island Exodus destination event continued on Monday and Tuesday at Jewel Paradise Cove Resort in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. On Monday, Mule presented a guest-filled show. Tuesday’s action featured a Warren Haynes‘ “Q & Play” set in which he performed some of his favorite songs and talked about them.
Monday’s performance started with a jam that the quartet worked into “Bad Little Doggie.” The band went on to focus on staples and brought out saxophonist Ron Holloway for a “Blind Man In The Dark” that included “Hear My Train A Coming” within. Then, Holloway and Promise Of The Real percussionist Tato Melgar added to a “Broke Down On The Brazos” > “Tributary Jam” sequence and the “Time To Confess” that closed out the frame. A huge surprise came at the beginning of Monday’s second set when Mule dusted off Alice Cooper’s “I’m Eighteen” for the first time since December 31, 2002. Soon thereafter, Holloway, Melgar and guitarist Duane Betts made guest appearances on “Sco-Mule” and a “Melissa” > “Mountain Jam” > “Melissa” pairing. All of Lukas Nelson & Promise Of The Real and Holloway added to Peter Tosh’s “Stop That Train” and Neil Young’s “Cortez The Killer” as the encore.
Haynes honored Little Feat’s 50th anniversary by opening his afternoon “storytellers” set yesterday with “Roll Um Easy.” He then went with Elmore James’ “Mean Mistreatin’ Mama.” The obscure “Out Of The Rain” from Mulennium came next along with Van Morrison’s “Cyprus Avenue,” rare original “It Began To Snow” and Jim Croce’s “Roller Derby Queen.” Duane Betts lent a hand on “Roller Derby Queen” as well as “Seven Turns” from Warren’s Allman Brothers Band days. Haynes was then joined by Lukas Nelson and Holloway for Willie Nelson’s “Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground.” The “Q & Play” set concluded with guest-filled renditions of Neil Young’s “Helpless” and Bob Dylan’s “It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry.” Gov’t Mule ends Island Exodus with two sets tonight.
