Gov’t Mule Plays 1st Show In 15 Months At Westville Music Bowl
Gov’t Mule returned to the stage on Friday at the Westville Music Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut. The concert marked The Mule’s first show in 15 months as well as the first of a three-night run in New Haven.
Gov’t Mule — guitarist Warren Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, keyboardist Danny Louis and bassist Jorgen Carlsson — eased into “Lay Your Burden Down” to kick off the show with Haynes and Louis harmonizing on the intro before the band rocked out the number from Mule’s 2000 album, Life Before Insanity. Next up, the band slipped into “Bring On The Music” ahead of “Game Face,” which saw Haynes tearing things up before dropping into a slow burn jam that revved back up into the song. Haynes then reeled off a few more hot licks ahead of the conclusion. The early Mule instrumental “Trane” from their 1995 self-titled debut album then encompassed James Brown and The J.B.’s “Doin’ It To Death.” “Man I Wanna Be” and “Little Toy Brain” would then preface set closer “Banks Of The Deep End.”
The reggae-tinged “Time To Confess” got the second frame underway. The song saw the band getting into a minor jam with Warren working the wah and adding some flange on his Les Paul as the band surged behind him. Mule then cooled things down for “No Need To Suffer” ahead of the Howlin’ Wolf nod “I Asked Her For Water” and “Rocking Horse.” Haynes then led the band through CCR’s “Effigy” which saw the guitarist locking in with Abts as the drummer peeled off a shuffling beat and Haynes teased the guitar lick on Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” during the jam. Warren and company brought the second set to a close with Al Green’s “I’m A Ram.” Gov’t Mule began the encore with a “Bring On The Music Reprise” before heading into the Marshall Tucker Band classic “Can’t You See,” which saw Louis playing the iconic flute line on the Hammond organ. Danny also rocked the 88s and Haynes offered up some tasty soloing before bringing the song and the evening to a close.
