Goose treated capacity crowds at Providence’s Amica Mutual Pavilion to memorable spectacles on Friday and Saturday nights for their annual Goosemas run, which featured a slew of cover debuts, bold production and an impressive roster of special guests. The Connecticut-based ensemble staged the narrative-driven “Barnaby Glimpse’s Show Upon Time” as the theme for Goosemas XII, a two-night event.
The quartet turned the arena into the colonial-era town of Lovering’s Hollow. Host Barnaby Glimpse served as the master of ceremonies while the members of Goose hit the stage dressed to impress and were joined at times by an array of animal-themed puppets, while curated visuals were displayed.
On Friday, Goose launched Goosemas XII with their first-ever cover of Caravan Palace’s “Dramophone.” Woodwind specialist Stuart Bogie augmented the band on the opener and remained out for a large majority of the show. The foursome devoted the rest of the first set to songs named after or referencing animals including “Creatures,” “Atlas Dogs,” “Red Bird,” “Silver Rising,” a fresh take on Shouting Matches’ “Bear,” rare “Moby” and stunning rendition of the Pink Floyd classic “Pigs (Three Different Ones).” Fittingly, Goose capped the opening stanza with “Animal.”
Friday’s second set was a well-jammed affair featuring +20-minute explorations of “Arrow,” “Madhuvan” and “Dripfield” along with a “So Ready” opener. “Arrow” gave way to the set’s lone cover debut, the Goose debut of the Radiohead A Moon Shaped Pool gem “Burn The Witch.”
The band consisting of guitarist Rick Mitarotonda, multi-instrumentalist Peter Anspach, bassist Trevor Weekz and drummer Cotter Ellis returned to the stage with Stuart Bogie in tow to start the encore with an emotion-laden “Jed Stone.” Cotter vacated for the ensuing premiere take on Gregory Alan Isakov’s “Master & A Hound” before Rick and Peter were left to close out the night with a beautiful first-time cover of Neil Young’s “Sugar Mountain.” Anspach exited leaving just Mitarotonda to end the Neil Young favorite by his lonesome.

Goose kicked off the second night on Saturday with help from the Providence College Choir. The ladies backed the quartet on the traditional ballad “Wild Mountain Thyme” and a powerful version of the beloved “Give It Time.” The subsequent guest-less “Flodown” brought the energy up before “Echo Of A Rose,” “Into The Myst,” “Strange Overtones,” “Wysteria Lane” and “(dawn)” filled out the rest of Saturday’s first set. Both “Wild Mountain Thyme” and Brian Eno & David Byrne’s “Strange Overtones” were cover debuts.
A three-piece horn section of Stuart Bogie on sax, Dave Nelson on trombone and Jordan McLean on trumpet took the stage with Goose for the final set of the weekend. Up first was a rousing rendition of The Band’s “Life Is A Carnival,” a cover debut. The horns then added brass to extended versions of “Thatch,” “Big Modern!” and “Hot Tea” ahead of Trevor Weekz providing attendees with a trip to “Marb House” for a 10-minute DJ Marb Menthols excursion. Goose and the horns went on to drive the sold-out crowd into a frenzy with a 19-minute “Factory Fiction.”
Bogie, Nelson and McLean returned with Goose to begin the encore with the weekend’s second “Dramophone” cover to bookend Goosemas XII. The joyous “The Empress Of Organos,” featuring the horns and choir, was tacked on for good measure to seal the two-night stand.

Upon landing in a new world Barnaby Glimpse welcomed his new friends to his Show Upon Time. Following his opening monologue, the band kicked into a Menagerie set marked by animal balloons, animal puppets and animal performers. Carnies also passed out Goose branded Animal Crackers. After Animal, Barnaby reappeared on stage for a brief monologue. During the encore, members slowly left the stage, Cotter first after Jed, then Stu and Trevor after Master & a Hound. Peter left during Sugar Mountain. At the end of the song, Rick shut off the lamp on his rig and left the stage.

During the encore all of the characters and puppets appeared as well as two aerialists. There was also a balloon drop and confetti during Dramophone. The show ended with the veil opening back up, after the veil sequence, the characters, puppets, choir, and band had vanished. This show was part of Goosemas XII.
