By Scott Bernstein Jan 3, 2017 • 8:00 am PST
Michigan’s own Greensky Bluegrass ended 2016 with a pair of home state shows at Royal Oak Music Theatre in Royal Oak on Friday and Saturday nights. The band was joined by fellow Michigan natives Lindsay Lou & The Flatbellys to kick off the action and for guest spots each night. Full audience audio recordings of Greensky’s year-ending performances surfaced and can be streamed below.
Greensky showed off the diversity of the band’s repertoire over the course of two nights in Royal Oak. Friday’s performance included such fan favorites as “In Control,” “All Four,” “The Four” and “Kerosene.” The group honored George Michael with a take on “Careless Whisper” featuring vocals from Lindsay Lou. Later in the night, GSBG welcomed Mark Lavengood and Josh Rilko of The Flatbellys for “Fredrico.” The night ended with a “Ain’t No Bread In The Breadbox” encore.
On New Year’s Eve Greensky dressed in white tuxedos and threw more covers into the mix. The group kicked off their first of two sets with a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Let’s Spend The Night Together” and ended the opening set with JJ Cale’s “After Midnight.” Within were such stapleas as “Run Or Die,” “Demons” and “Broke Mountain Breakdown.” GSBG came out for the second set with “Don’t Lie” and eventually worked the jam into “1999” by Prince. Lindsay Lou emerged to sing the Prince cover and the rest of her band came out for “Auld Lang Syne.” Greensky then finished “1999” and “Don’t Lie.” Other favorites found in the second set on New Year’s Eve were “Jaywalking,” “Take Cover,” “Leap Year” and a cover of Traffic’s “Light Up Of Leave Me Alone.” The evening came to a close with an encore of “Dustbowl Overtures” and “Money For Nothing.”
