Full Shows Audio: Circles Around The Sun Embarks On First Mini-Tour

After making their impressive live debut at Lockn’ in August, Circles Around The Sun returned over Thanksgiving week for a series of three performances. Audio of all three Circles Around The Sun shows recently surfaced and can be streamed below.

Guitarist Neal Casal originally started the project to create music to accompany Justin Kreutzmann’s visuals at intermissions of last year’s Fare Thee Well – Celebrating 50 Years Of Grateful Dead concerts. The response was so enthusiastic that Casal issued his compositions as an album under the Circles Around The Sun moniker. He then put together a live band featuring drummer Mark Levy, keyboardist Adam MacDougall and bassist Dan Horne for a late night set at Lockn. Last week the band played a total of three shows.

The run began last Tuesday with Circles Around The Sun’s first ever headlining show as Casal & Co. performed at The Hamilton in Washington, D.C. Next up for the foursome was a visit to Brooklyn Bowl in New York City for the longest show of the run. Finally, CATS opened for Railroad Earth at the Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania on Friday night. While the setlists are similar, there’s plenty of improv within.

Looking for Phish-esque jams? May we recommend “Ginger Says” from Brooklyn or Stroudsburg. Looking for major-key bliss a la the Dead’s “The Wheel”? Check out “Space Wheel” from Washington or Brooklyn. And of course “Scarlotta’s Magnolias” owes much to its namesake “Scarlet Begonias.” Then there’s “Saturday’s Child,” which has the slinky feel of J.J. Cale’s best material.
