On Saturday night Grateful Dead tribute act Joe Russo’s Almost Dead played 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colorado with support from Medeski Martin & Wood. While the show was supposed to be held at Red Rocks, the concert was moved indoors when bad weather threatened the famed outdoor amphitheater. JRAD immediately referenced the situation by opening with a debut cover of Bob Dylan’s “Shelter From The Storm.”
Saturday’s first set continued on with Grateful Dead favorites “Bertha,” “Let It Grow,” “Help On The Way,” “Slipknot!,” “Throwing Stones” and “It Must Have Been The Roses.” From there, Joe Russo’s Almost Dead debuted their take on “Gonesville,” a song from Bob Weir’s 2016 cowboy album Blue Mountain. A well-jammed “Shakedown Street” brought the opening stanza to a close.
At the start of the second set Joe Russo, John Medeski, Billy Martin and Adam Morford emerged on a riser setup above the stage. The foursome engaged in a drum/percussion jam using instruments from Moford’s Morfbeats collection. Remaining members of JRAD eventually took the stage as the “Drums”/”Space” sequence continued and morphed into “Dark Star.” Russo came down from the riser to play his kit, while Medeski shared Marco Benevento’s keyboard rig for “Dark Star.”
Frequent JRAD collaborator Stuart Bogie also contributed sax and flute to the second set. The closing stanza included a full “Terrapin Station” suite as well as exploratory “Eyes Of The World” and more. Saturday’s first encore consisted of “One More Saturday Night” and “Not Fade Away,” but the show wasn’t over yet. Joe Russo’s Almost Dead and Bogie returned for “Ripple” and “Born To Run” with the Bruce Springsteen cover played as the house lights were up. Next up for JRAD is a three-night stand at Joy Theater in New Orleans May 5 – 7.
