Full Show Audio: Umphrey’s McGee Welcomes Shady Horns In New Orleans

As we reported, Chicago sextet Umphrey’s McGee returned to New Orleans last Thursday night as part of their cross-country tour with TAUK. Umphrey’s was joined by The Shady Horns of Lettuce for portions of both sets as well as the evening’s encore. An audience recording of the performance has recently surfaced and can be heard below.
Trumpeter Eric “Benny” Bloom and saxophonist Ryan Zoidis made their first appearance of the evening towards the end of the first set for “Headphones & Snowcones” and “Booth Love.” The instrumental “Headphones & Snowcones” was the night’s big bust out as Umphrey’s hadn’t performed the song since July 3, 2013 – a span of 275 shows.
A night filled with heavy hitters continued through the second set with “In The Kitchen,” “Ocean Billy” and “August” among the songs played before The Shady Horns returned to help end the closing stanza. Bloom and Zoidis contributed to “Example 1” and “Women Wine And Song.” Thursday night’s second set also included the 2016 debut of Who cover “Baba O’Riley.” A show attendee pulled a fire alarm during the “Bright Lights, Big City” encore featuring the horns, which led to power being cut. UM and their guests made the best of the situation by turning the stage into a big NOLA-style party complete with the horns blowing, beads being distributed and Jake Cinninger as well as Joel Cummins hopping on percussion.
