The Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to the stage on Thursday night for the first of three shows at the Merriam Theater in Philadelphia. Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi led their group through one lengthy set after a performance from Marc Broussard. One of the highlights of the night came towards the end of TTB’s set, when Susan fronted the band on a new original called “Shame.”
Last night’s main TTB set began with “Laugh About It” and “Do I Look Worried” ahead of another rendition of the recently debuted blues classic “Chevrolet.” Up next was “Anyday,” which saw the group stretch out for the first time in the evening. “Let Me Get By” was also nicely extended ahead of covers of Allen Toussaint’s “Get Out Of My Life, Woman” and “Color Of The Blues” by George Jones.
After “Right On Time,” the Tedeschi Trucks Band lit into a hard-hitting progression. “Shame” spanned just over seven minutes, has the classic TTB sound and featured a scorching solo from Derek. “That’s a new one that we all just wrote called ‘Shame.’ There’s a lot of that going around the world,” Susan said after the 12-piece made their way through the song. “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free” came next along with “I Pity The Fool” before the TTB flexed their improvisational might on a wild “I Want More” to end the set. The band then ended the night with a “Bound For Glory” encore.
