Full Show Audio: Steve Kimock & Friends Play 1st Of 2 At Hop Monk Tavern
By Scott Bernstein May 4, 2018 • 3:31 pm PDT
On Thursday night, the Hop Monk Tavern in Sebastopol, California hosted the first of two shows featuring guitarist Steve Kimock & Friends. Kimock and his troupe mixed material from his own catalog with songs from the Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band repertoires over the course of two sets. An audience recording of the show has surfaced and can be heard below.
Steve Kimock’s band for evening featured his former RatDog mates Jeff Chimenti on keyboards, Robin Sylvester on bass and Jay Lane on drums along with tenor saxophonist Rob Sudduth and ALO guitarist Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz. The group opened with Kimock’s own “It’s Up To You” and continued with the pairing “Sun Sun Sun” and Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers To Cross.” Chimenti, Kimock and Sudduth then shined on Thigpen/Banks/Marion’s “That’s What Love Will Make You Do” ahead of Hunter/Garcia gems “Ship Of Fools” and “Bertha” to close the frame.

Thursday’s second set began with a take on Ernest Ranglin’s “Nana’s Chalk Pipe” that featured “Anorexia” from Kimock’s Zero days within. Steve then led the group through expansive versions of “You’re The One” and “They Love Each Other.” Next up was a Lebo-sung “Estimated Prophet” before Steve Kimock & Friends served up an “After Midnight” > “Eleanor Rigby” > “After Midnight” sequence ala the Jerry Garcia Band. The night concluded with a particularly funky “Shakedown Street.”
Steve Kimock & Friends return to the Hop Monk Tavern on Friday night.
