Full Show Audio: Spafford Returns Home To Play Tour Closer In Arizona

After their most extensive and high-profile tour yet, Spafford returned to Arizona to play a tour-ending homecoming gig of sorts at the Orpheum Theater in Flagstaff in front of many of their fans who used to be able to see them every week. The four-piece band wrapped up their cross-country Fall tour with a two set show that saw the band nod to both one of the original jambands and a more contemporary one that came to fame in the mid-90s.

Spafford opened up the night with “Take Your Mamma,” offering up just the 12th take on the tune that they debuted back in 2012. Next up the band delivered their first cover of the night with the Grateful Dead’s “West L.A. Fadeaway.” The late-era Dead tune from In The Dark was shelved for over a year after its debut before it was revived last month in Portland, Maine. An almost 13-minute take on the setlist staple “Backdoor Funk” followed. With “Slip And Squander,” “Eternity,” “Walls” and “Plans” bringing the first set to an end.

The rising jam act got their second set of the night underway with “America” and “My Road (My Road)” which was debuted earlier this year. The band dusted off their cover of “Send Me On My Way” next, playing the Rusted Root tune from their 1994 debut album When I Woke for the first time since October of last year. Spafford closed out their final set of the tour with a half-hour, jam-filled run of “Electric Taco Stand” > “Alternate Ending” > “Electric Taco Stand” and “The Reprise.”

The quartet brought the night to an end with a two-song encore. First up was a version of Van Morrison’s oft-covered “Into The Mystic” from his 1970 release Moondance and just their second take ever on the new original “Steak Sauce.” Spafford will join Umphrey’s McGee, The Disco Biscuits, Joe’s Russo’s Almost and more at Dominican Holidaze in early December and will close out the year with a three-night New Year’s run at Crescent Ballroom in the hometown of Phoenix, Arizona.
