Last night Dead & Company pulled into Boulder, Colorado to kick off a two-night stand at Folsom Field. The six-piece act continued to work their way through the Grateful Dead’s catalog of originals and covers, while offering up a couple of tour debuts and a segue-filled second set.

Dead & Co. kicked things off with their first 2017 take on the Motown classic “Dancing In The Street.” The tune, which was made famous by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, got an extended funky workout and was followed by John Mayer leading the band on “Cold Rain & Snow.” Bob Weir took over on lead vocals on the next two tunes, first with his ode to debauchery “Hell In A Bucket,” and then with the tour debut of Johnny Cash’s “Big River.” The band then worked their way through Senator Al Franken’s favorite Dead tune “Althea,” and closed the first set out with “New Speedway Boogie,” “The Music Never Stopped” and a tender version of “Ripple.”

The seamless second set got underway with the acid-dripping “St. Stephen” that transitioned into “Estimated Prophet” > “Eyes Of The World.” From their the band offered up laid-back, country-fried version of “Deal” that saw keyboardist Jeff Chimenti work his magic on the Hammond B3 organ and Mayer peel off a number of guitar solos. Weir’s “Let It Grow” preceded the “Drums” > “Space” portion of the night, the psychedelic excursion eventually wound it’s way into the familiar bass bombs and poly-rhythmic drumming of “The Other One.” The second set drew to a close with “Morning Dew,” with Dead & Company concluding the evening with a “Touch Of Grey” encore.

Dead & Company return to the stage for their second show at Folsom Field tonight, which will be webcast at nugs.tv.
