NedFest in Nederland, Colorado hosted a birthday celebration for Oteil Burbridge on Friday night. The Dead & Company/ARU/Allman Brothers Band bassist was joined by a number of his musical friends for the set. Burbridge’s band for the night featured Melvin Seals on keyboards, John Kadlecik and Ian Neville on guitar, Jay Lane on drums, vocalists Lyle Divinsky and Alfreda Gerald, percussionist Weedie Braimah and a horn section of Natalie Cressman and Jennifer Hartswick.
The set began with The Meters’ “People Say” and rolled on with takes on The Isley Brothers’ “It’s Your Thing” and Jerry Garcia’s “Run For The Roses.” Next up were covers of Bob Marley’s “Rebel Music,” blues standard “It Hurts Me Too,” Bob Dylan’s “Gotta Serve Somebody” and “I Got You (I Feel Good)” by James Brown. From there, Oteil and the ensemble worked through Garcia’s “Cats Under The Stars,” Marley’s “Top Rankin'” and The Band’s “The Weight.”
Friday’s set continued on with a lengthy and gorgeous rendition of Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers To Cross” and an extended take on Garcia’s “Reuben & Cerise.” Burbridge then led the group on Jerry’s “Gommorah” ahead of a set-closing version of the Bob Dylan classic “Tangled Up In Blue.”
