An emotional week for moe. concluded on Friday with the band’s late night performance at the PlayStation Theater in New York City. Earlier in the week moe. revealed the shocking news bassist Rob Derhak has been diagnosed with cancer diagnosis and the group will soon take an indefinite hiatus while Rob undergoes treatment. moe. fans filled the PlayStation on Friday for a show that was heavy on classic material and included a particularly poignant encore.
Derhak was in the spotlight after the instrumental “Mar-DeMa” opener to sing “Runaway Overlude.” An adventurous “She” was up next and was extended to the 20-minute mark. Rob then took an opportunity to thank the fans for their “support and well wishes” adding, “it’s certainly overwhelming.” Next up was “Paper Dragon” ahead of an inventive “head.” > “George” > “head.” sequence to close the first set.
moe. kicked off the second set with “Deep This Time” > “Downward Facing Dog.” From there, the five-piece strung together three of their most beloved songs for a sequence that spanned over an hour. Up first was an improv-heavy “Timmy Tucker” which was followed by “Time Ed.” moe. concluded Friday’s second set with a powerful “Rebubula.” After a series of “al.nouncements” to begin the encore, Rob told the crowd “don’t worry about me, I’ll be alright and back up playing in no time” to a roar from audience. The quintet then delivered a beautiful rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” to end the evening.
On Friday moe. will play a set at the Huckleberry Jam in Idaho and then will close down shop while Derhak battles oropharyngeal cancer. Check out our “Get Well Rob” edition of Saturday Stream.
