Full Show Audio: Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Welcomes Stuart Bogie & Debuts 2 At Capitol Theatre

Quintet Joe Russo’s Almost Dead concluded a three-show stand at The Capitol Theatre on Sunday night in Port Chester, New York. The band welcomed old friend Stuart Bogie to sit-in on a variety of instruments throughout the evening and then encored with a pair of debuts.

Fittingly, the concert started off with the Sunday sermon of “Samson & Delilah” sung by Scott Metzger. Next, Tom Hamilton stepped into the spotlight for “China Cat Sunflower” and “Reuben & Cerise.” The action continued with well-jammed renditions of “Truckin'” and “Tennessee Jed” ahead of an adventurous, 15+ minute “Greatest Story Ever Told” to end the opening stanza. Both “Truckin'” and “Jed” featured contributions from Bogie.

JRAD kicked off the second set with “Man Smart, Women Are Smarter” and then the five-piece powered through “Bertha” and “Mr. Charlie.” From there, keyboardist Marco Benevento led the troupe – complete with Bogie on sax – for a beautiful jam on Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” that eventually gave way to a riveting “Eyes Of The World.” Stuart Bogie showed off his skills throughout the show, but never moreso than on the stellar “Eyes.” Up next was a rollicking “Cumberland Blues” and the improvisational highlight of the night: “Dancing In The Streets.” Joe Russo’s Almost Dead & Bogie fit in multiple jams within the 25+ minute “Dancin'” including a crowd-pleasing portion of Dire Straits’ “Money For Nothing.”

Russo and his mates weren’t done with the surprises when they returned for the encore. First, bassist Dave Dreiwitz took an extremely rare turn on lead vocals. Dreiwitz belted a cover of the Dr. Feelgood gem “She Does It Right,” a song written by Wilko Johnson. Then, Scott Metzger channeled Pigpen on McKernan’s “Chinatown Shuffle” to end the evening.
