On July 22 Grateful Dead tribute act Joe Russo’s Almost Dead concluded a two night stand at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York on keyboardist Marco Benevento’s 40th birthday. The latest installment of JRAD’s Taper Tuesdays series features a crispy official recording of last month’s Cap finale.
The crowd welcomed the five-piece to the stage by singing “Happy Birthday To You” to Benevento. JRAD then kicked off the wild first set with “King Solomon’s Marbles.” Over an hour later the band finished the seamless set with the Almost Dead debut of “Play, Stop, Pause” from Benevento and Joe Russo’s Duo days. Within the set were versions of “Cumberland Blues,” “I Need A Miracle,” “Crazy Fingers” and “St. Stephen.” Marco’s wife Katie brought her husband a cake at the end of the opening stanza.
Joe Russo’s Almost Dead began the second set with a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Silvio” which they worked into “Scarlet Begonias.” Eventually, “Fire On The Mountain” would surface but not before an adventurous “Cassidy” connected “Scarlet” to “Fire.” Another beloved song suite, “Lost Sailor” > “Saint Of Circumstance,” came next before “Bertha” ended the second set. For the encore, JRAD treated fans to a cover of Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves Of London.”
