Full Show Audio: Holly Bowling Adds Disco Biscuits Song To Usual Grateful Dead & Phish Mix
By Scott Bernstein May 24, 2017 • 1:03 pm PDT
On Saturday night pianist Holly Bowling played the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. Bowling dedicated the concert to a friend of hers who had passed away and incorporated a Disco Biscuits cover within her usual mix of Phish and Grateful Dead songs.
Holly utilized a nine-foot Yamaha CFX piano at the show and the death of her friend brought an added level of emotion to Bowling’s performance. The pianist opened with “A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing” by Phish and then worked the Grateful Dead’s “Wharf Rat” into “Swept Away” and “Steep” ahead of a set-closing “Terrapin Station Suite” > “Stella Blue” sequence.
Bowling kicked off the evening’s second set with “Cassidy” before dedicating the performance to her friend Kenny Reiss who had died earlier in the week. Holly then began her sixth-ever rendition of “Magellan” by the Disco Biscuits. She segued from “Magellan” into “Bird Song” and back again before moving on to “Piper” and “Steam” before finally finishing the Disco Biscuits song. A powerful “Dirt” came next ahead of the “I Know You Rider” which closed out the second set. A poignant “Miss You” encore brought the evening to its conclusion.
Holly Bowling will perform her own set and will be an Artist-At-Large at next month’s Disc Jam.
