Last Tuesday night Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann assembled a bevy of talented musicians to perform under the moniker Bill Kreutzmann’s TryptoBand at Zodiac’s in Petaluma, California. Billy K was joined by David Nelson, Barry Sless, Reed Mathis and Jason Crosby in the quintet. Recently, a soundboard matrix recording of the show was posted to Archive.org thanks to taper Tim “Sound Dawg” Stiegler so we can all hear what went down at Zodiac’s.

Nelson and Mathis handled the vast majority of vocals on two sets and an encore worth of songs from the Grateful Dead and Dave Nelson Band live repertoires with one key exception. In the first set, Tea Leaf Green bassist Reed Mathis led the ensemble through a cover of Phish’s “Back On The Train.” A somber moment took place towards the start of the second set when Kreutzmann stopped “He’s Gone” to dedicate the song to his friend Bobby Keys, the longtime Rolling Stones sax man who died earlier in the day.
