On December 9, Ardmore Music Hall near Philadelphia hosted a pre-party ahead of the evening’s Everyone Orchestra concert. Guitarist John Kadlecik performed a set in honor of Jerry Garcia & David Grisman’s The Pizza Tapes compilation in which attendees were treated to pizza and beer. High-quality of the entire set, minus one song, recently surfaced on YouTube.
Garcia, Grisman and Tony Rice recorded The Pizza Tapes during two 1993 sessions at Grisman’s studio. The trio was just having fun performing old songs they loved and Grisman released The Pizza Tapes in 2000. Kadlecik plucked songs for his set from the list of tunes Jerry, David and Tony performed for the LP. He started with “Louis Collins,” the one tune missing from the video. From there, the former DSO guitarist played “Long Black Veil,” “Rosa Lee McFall,” “Drifting Too Far From Shore” and “Little Sadie.” The set concluded with John K.’s Pizza Tapes-esque renditions of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” “So What” by Miles Davis and the traditional “House Of The Rising Sun” and “Shady Grove.”
