While Jam Cruise 15 was supposed to make a port stop in Grand Cayman on January 23, poor weather prohibited the Norweigan Pearl from visiting the island. Organizers quickly put together a series of sets to take place on the boat instead and one of them wound up being a highlight of whole trip. “Grateful At Sea” saw a number of musicians aboard Jam Cruise 15 come together to perform a tribute to the Grateful Dead and a crispy recording of the set has surfaced.
The core band featured guitarists Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz and Steve Kimock, drummer Jay Lane, keyboardist Joey Porter, vocalist Lesley Grant and bassist Reed Mathis. Lebo said it best, “It turns out it’s not hard to put together a band on Jam Cruise.” Highlights of the set included a gorgeous “They Love Each Other,” a groovy “Brown Eyed Women” that saw The Shook Twins add backing vocals and Vinnie Amico of moe. on drums as well as a momentous “Eyes Of The World” > “Sugaree” sequence with George Porter Jr. on bass, Robert Walter on keys, Cloud 9 staff member Captain Toast on percussion and Karl Denson on sax. Plus, Kimock shined on a soaring, instrumental “Stella Blue” that saw the guitarist utilize pedal steel.
