Fleet Foxes and Bonny Light Horseman used the occasion of both bands being on this year’s Green River Festival lineup to share the stage together Saturday at Franklin County Fairgrounds in Greenfield, Massachusetts. The musical conglomerate treated festivalgoers to a cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Hejira.”

Fleet Foxes covered “Hejira” last year at their “Spring Recital” concert at Los Angeles’ Belasco Theatre, with Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold‘s father joining on bass. Frequent Fleet Foxes collaborator, and current tourmate, Tim Bernardes, has accompanied the band on recent “Hejira” performances surrounding the Green River Festival rendition.

Bonny Light Horseman — the trio of Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson and Josh Kaufman — are touring in support of their recently released new double album, Keep Me on Your Mind/See You Free. Mitchell was first to appear with Fleet Foxes at Green River, coming out to sing “Phoenix,” the song she recorded with Fleet Foxes for the Big Red Machine album How Long Do You Think It’s Gonna Last that came out in 2021.

Mitchell and her BLH bandmate Eric D. Johnson (Fruit Bats) came back later in Fleet Foxes set to help out on “Hejira.” The song served as the title track to Joni Mitchell’s 1976 folk-jazz album.
