Philip Glenn: Outsider

Newport Folk Festival just wrapped up a week and a half ago and I always like to do a RecommNeds column with some artists that might be a good fit for a future folk fest (should they need any input from me!). So, with that in mind, I’d like to draw your attention to the debut record from Philip Glenn, a fiddle player from Los Angeles who plays some delicious Appalachian music. There is some superb fiddlin’ and more on Outsider, and then some other fun like Ramones and Thelonious Monk(!) covers. Check it out!

Dana Sipos: Trick Of The Light

One of the greatest feelings (for me, at least) is discovering a new artist that just clicks for you. That’s what I love about Newport Folk. And that’s what I love about Dana Sipos, whose new album Trick Of The Light, is one of my favorites of the year, a true where-have-you-been-hiding? revelation. Her folk is a lush and gorgeous soundscape, a voice singing deep, hidden-secret lyrics with a range of guitars and strings and just the right dose of this-and-that. Can’t recommend this one highly enough, I hope you dig it.

Cliff Westfall: Baby You Win

Newport was brimming with country music this year and so Cliff Westfall would fit right in. His just-released record, Baby You Win, is filled with that classic, swinging, old-school Nashville country sound. Westfall also has a secret weapon with a killer band of NYC players, anchored by none other than JamBase regular, Scott Metzger, on guitar. The band really helps Westfall’s already great songs pop, and plenty of tasty guitar playing, of course. Enjoy ‘em all!
