Fans Vote For Phil Lesh & Friends To Honor 1977 Grateful Dead

One of the great debates of Grateful Dead fandom is which year was the best year in the band’s history. Terrapin Crossroads put that question to fans as last night Phil Lesh & Friends played a free show at the San Rafael, California venue using a setlist from a year voted on by fans in an internet poll. 1977 won out, so Phil and his band re-created the Dead’s famed May 19, 1977 show from Atlanta’s Fox Theater.

Phil Lesh was joined by guitarists Stu Allen and Grahame Lesh, keyboardist Scott Guberman and drummers Ezra Lipp and Alex Koford for last night’s performance. Since the band wound up performing a setlist from 1977, Lesh called in vocalist Elliott Peck to play the Donna role. The group made one change between what was played on May 19, 1977 and last night’s show as they tacked on “And We Bid You Goodnight” as an encore. Grahame and Stu did the bulk of the singing as they led songs originally performed by Bob Weir and Jerry Garcia respectively. Peck stuck mostly to harmonies with the exception of “Passenger.”
