Exclusive Premiere: Nolatet Shares New Single From Upcoming Studio Album

Nolatet brings together the talents of drummer Johnny Vidacovich, pianist Brian Haas, bassist James Singleton and vibraphonist Mike Dillon. The quartet will release their sophomore studio album, No Revenge Necessary, on April 27 via Royal Potato Family. JamBase is pleased to premiere the second single off the LP, “Bluebelly,” in the form of an in-studio video.
James Singleton provides some background on the track, “‘Bluebelly’ emerged directly from post-Katrina upheavals in my personal life. Living in Los Angeles and New Orleans simultaneously was joy, adversity and all manner of ‘tragic magic’ as Mac (aka Dr. John) would say. The silver lining was getting involved with Mike Dillon and Skerik and re-starting my association with Stanton Moore. These three really influenced my writing by radically re-interpreting my older tunes and it would ultimately lead to the formation of Nolatet.”

The quartet first displayed their wild interpretation of the traditional New Orleans sound with the 2016 release of Dogs. Nolatet continues the adventure with No Revenge Neccessary and “Bluebelly” shows off the adventurous aural palette colored by the foursome. “The first part of ‘Bluebelly’ popped out real quick on the piano, but I wanted to punk-you-ate it with something that reflected my new pals. I was also thinking of a wild party at the end of a Led Zeppelin tour when Larry Sieberth and I got to play with Bonham. You’ll hear that energy in both the arrangement and the performance,” Singleton adds.
James loves what his band mates bring to the track, “Brian Haas always puts his stamp on my music in a good way, as well. It was his idea to play the melody at slower than half tempo on the way out. I did have something specific in mind for drums, but with Johnny Vidacovich I generally keep my mouth shut; what he does is invariably unique and appropriate.”
