Exclusive Premiere: The Motet Shares New Single ‘That Dream’

Colorado-based seven-piece The Motet continues to win fans with their signature mix of funk, soul and rock both at their improv-heavy live shows and over the course of seven full-length albums. Today, JamBase is pleased to premiere the latest single from The Motet, “That Dream.”

Guitarist Ryan Jalbet wrote the throwback tune with lyrics by vocalist Lyle Divinsky. “I was inspired to write something more in the style of straight greasy funk ala James Brown/The Meters,” Jalbert told JamBase. “I wanted to create a groove that was driven by some interesting interlocking guitar and bass unison riffs with room in between for the pocket to percolate in between and allowing space for horns and vocals to interact.”

Divinsky was inspired the minute he heard the song, “When Ryan sent the demo for That Dream, it was instant! I had just woken from a crazy dream that took me down some really weird mental journeys and just started writing and singing. The whole song wrote itself in an hour, but the chorus kept holding me up. After a few bouts with it, Ryan came through with this hook and it was perfect. It’s a unique and kind of new vibe for The Motet, and we’re really proud of it.”

Lyle, Ryan, drummer Dave Watts, keyboardist Joey Porter, bassist Garrett Sayers, saxophonist Drew Sayers and trumpeter Parris Fleming are gearing up for their annual headlining show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado on June 2. This year, The Motet has tapped BoomBox and The New Mastersounds to open.

Additionally, the band has partnered with non-profit Youth On Record as Music Ambassadors to bring music to Colorado’s underserved youth who would not otherwise have the opportunity at music education. A Crowdwise campaign is underway with the first 100 fans to donate $350 receiving VIP packages for The Motet’s upcoming visit to Red Rocks including an exclusive backstage tour of the famed venue.
