Exclusive Premiere: Blind Boys Of Alabama Perform At 2017 Telluride Blues & Brews
The 2017 installment of the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival took place in the scenic Colorado mountain town September 15 – 17. JamBase is pleased to premiere a handful of official videos from the 2017 event starting with footage of Blind Boys of Alabama‘s stirring rendition of the traditional “Amazing Grace.”
The Blind Boys Of Alabama played Blues & Brews ’17’s main stage on September 17. In addition to core vocalists Jimmy Carter, Ben Moore, Eric “Ricky” McKinnie and Paul Beasley, the backing band is led by guitarist and musical director Joey Williams and Gregg Allman Band keyboardist Pete Levin is among the other members of the group. “Amazing Grace” has long been a staple for the group.
Here’s more info about the Blind Boys Of Alabama:
The seven-decade ride The Blind Boys of Alabama have been on is a testament to their faith, to their love of music, and to perseverance. They turned down offers to “cross over” to secular music, sticking steadfastly to their unique gospel sound, and that commitment to delivering The Word has made them one of the most lauded and respected gospel vocal group to have ever worked. Grammy awards for their recorded work, a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, and induction into the Gospel Hall of Fame, as well as performances in the White House for three different presidents are all indications that staying true to gospel – the music they love – was a fine decision indeed.
Originally sprung from the halls of the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in the 1930s when they were just kids, Jimmy Carter was one of the original members and is still performing today. They toured and raised their voices as part of America’s Civil Rights Movement. At this stage in their impossibly long and remarkable 70+ year career, the release and tour of the new GRAMMY-nominated album, Almost Home, can’t help but feel like their swan song, or like the culmination of their long journey.
