Otis Redding Tribute :: 01.25.2018 :: Apollo Theater :: NYC
An Evening of Respect Celebrating Otis Redding was held on Thursday at the famed Apollo Theater in New York City. The Dap-Kings served as house band for the all-star event, which featured a bevy of all-star musicians parading in out and throughout the course of the night. Speaking of parade, the concert started with a second line parade into the venue New Orleans style courtesy of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Karla Redding of the Otis Redding Foundation gave an intro ahead of Otis Redding III leading “Knock On Wood.” While Whoopi Goldberg was supposed to host, she was sick but that didn’t stop attendees from witnessing an incredible night of music. Early highlights included Paul Janeway of St. Paul & The Broken Bones leading “Down In The Valley” and “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” guitarists Warren Haynes and Marcus King teaming for “Satisfaction” and “I Can’t Turn You Loose” and Vintage Trouble’s Ty Taylor leading “These Arms Of Mine.

Booker T. Jones and Steve Cropper, two musicians who performed with Otis back in the Stax hey day, led The Dap-Kings on a run “Green Onions” and “Hip Hug Her” before vocalist Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child fame brought the house down on “A Change Is Gonna Come.” Then, Aloe Blacc emerged for “Dreams To Remember” and “Respect.” The night came to a close with a triumphant finale of “(Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay” featuring many of the evening’s musicians. Photographer Adam McCullough and videographer Scott Gibson were on hand to capture the action. Check out Adam’s photos followed by a playlist of Scott’s videos:
