Eric Clapton Welcomes Gary Clark Jr. & Jimmie Vaughan At Madison Square Garden

Legendary guitarist Eric Clapton returned to the stage on Thursday night for the first of two consecutive concerts at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Clapton stuck to a similar gameplan as his March shows at The Garden with a few changes thrown in. Slowhand ended the night with a Bo Diddley cover that featured guest appearances from openers Jimmie Vaughan and Gary Clark Jr..

The guitarist bookended his 14-song main set with J.J. Cale covers as he opened with “Somebody’s Knocking” and closed with “Cocaine.” Along the way Slowhand gave fans a taste of many eras of his music including the Cream days (“White Room”), Derek & The Dominos (“Layla”), his ’70s hits (“Wonderful Tonight”/”Lay Down Sally”) and the ’90s (“Tears In Heaven”). Clapton also delivered a number of blues classics such as “Key To The Highway,” “Crossroads” and “Little Queen Of Spades.”

When Clapton and his talented band came out for the encore, they lit into “Sunshine Of Your Love.” Slowhand welcomed Vaughan and Clark Jr. to the stage for a grand finale of “Before You Accuse Me.” Eric Clapton returns to The Garden on Friday night.
