As previously reported, the holy grail of Frank Zappa fandom, Roxy: The Movie will soon finally and officially be released. Today, Eagle Rock Entertainment confirmed the DVD will be issued on October 30.
“Frank broke all sound barriers in Music and pushed musical event horizons to educate and entertain his audiences so they could experience real possibilities on a contemporary music stage – all without taking himself seriously,” said Zappa’s wife Gail Zappa. “He always said he had “something for everyone from 8 to 13.” Being a mom I can tell you, that is when your imagination is wide open and some of those ideas stay fixed and expandable in time and space forever.”
The film being released in DVD and Blu-Ray formats features footage from the legendary guitarist’s epic three-night stand at The Roxy in Hollywood, California on December 8 – 10, 1973. Zappa was backed at the time by a fantastic lineup which included keyboardist George Duke, multi-instrumentalist Napoleon Murphy Brock, percussionist Ruth Underwood, trombonist Bruce Fowler, bassist Tom Fowler and drummers Chester Thompson and Ralph Humphrey.
“I’m beyond thrilled that Roxy The Movie is finally going to be available,” said Zappa’s son Ahmet Zappa (who recently took over day-to-day operations of the Zappa Family Trust). “It took a herculean effort to bring it to life. So much love, time, energy and attention to detail went into its resurrection. This movie rocks so hard, I think both old and new fans will agree, Enjoy!”
