As he inches closer to retirement with each passing show, late night talk show host David Letterman has featured an impressive lineup of musical guests in his final days at The Late Show. Last night was another fine example of top notch music on the show, as husband and wife duo Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires appeared on the program.
Backed by renowned harmonica player Mickey Raphael, with Isbell on guitar and Shires on fiddle, the pair shared vocals while treating the audience at The Ed Sullivan Theater to a cover of Warren Zevon’s “Mutineer.” Isbell and Shires released a recording of the track earlier this year backed by a cover of Lykke Li’s “I Follow Rivers.” Isbell’s new album, Something More Than Free, will be released July 17 through Southeastern Records.Watch their The Late Show appearance below.

Nothing feels like knowing your family (and your in-laws) are watching you on @Letterman. Every appearance was something we’ll never forget.

And of course it was a real special thing to sing Zevon’s beautiful song. He had a lot of those.
