For Dad: Watch Duane Betts & Maple Leaf Allstars Honor Dickey Betts In New Orleans

The guitarist was joined on The Allman Brothers Band’s “Blue Sky” by Ivan Neville, Tony Hall, Raymond Weber and Ari Teitel.

Guitarist Duane Betts paid tribute to his father, The Allman Brothers Band co-founding guitarist Dickey Betts, by leading a performance of “Blue Sky” in New Orleans on Sunday (April 28). Duane Betts was the guest of the assembled Maple Leaf Allstars at NOLA’s Maple Leaf Bar.

The Maple Leaf Allstars lineup on Sunday featured bassist Tony Hall, keyboardist Ivan Neville, guitarist Ari Teitel, drummer Raymond Weber and trumpeter Ashlin Parker. Duane Betts and saxophonist Skerik were the New Orleans-based musicians’ special guests on Sunday night. Both Betts and Skerik contributed to portions of the two-hour performance.

Dickey Betts died on April 18 at age 80 after years of declining health. Duane was one of Dickey’s four children and his only son. On April 19, the day after Dickey’s passing, Duane posted a moving tribute to his father. Read the note below:

“Blue Sky” was among Dickey Betts’ signature songs. The Allman Brothers Band originally released the song on their third studio album, 1972’s Eat A Peach. The Maple Leaf Allstars with Duane Betts and sans Ashlin Parker performed “Blue Sky” mid set. Duane handled the lead vocals his father made famous and exchanged dual leads and solos with Ari Teitel.
