Dogs In A Pile have established themselves as one of the most exciting acts in the jam scene, bringing their blend of psychedelic rock and improvisational prowess to live stages across the country. As the New Jersey-based quintet continues to expand their reach and build their fanbase, they’ve learned valuable lessons about life on the road.

JamBase asked the band to share 10 things they learned from their busy 2024 on the road, surviving and thriving on tour. From practical advice about staying well nourished to travel hacks to philosophical musings on maintaining creative energy, DIAP offer a glimpse into the realities of a rising band in today’s music industry.

Scroll on for the collective insights from keyboardist Jeremy Kaplan, guitarists Brian Murray and Jimmy Law, drummer Joey Babick and bassist Sam Lucid picked up from spending 2024 on tour.

1. Eating Before Load In Is Key

Everyone gets along better and is more productive.

2. There’s More Time In The Day When You Plan Ahead

Building in time to rehearse makes a killer show. We were able to write more on the road and finish songs. And it opened opportunities for side quests.

3. Taking Chances Pays Off

We pulled off our own stage production on a week’s notice for our annual camping event in New Jersey. We essentially produced our own festival – all in-house. Our team arranged everything. We’re a self-contained full-scale production. We can set up a show anywhere! All we need is a lawn and a budget.

4. Baseball Games Are Fun

We had our debut on the diamond when we sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” before a Phillies game. We also went to Dodgers Stadium and all got our vapes taken by security. Stay tuned for our exhibition match against Eggy!

5. Dogs Can Survive In Space

We recently played a sober benefit show at The Transparent Clinch Gallery in Asbury Park, New Jersey. We arranged for members of the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra to join us for an improvisational experience. Those guys are legends and it was one of the coolest musical experiences of our entire lives. We played together as “Dogs In Space.”

6. We Love California BUT

We learned how grateful we are to be from New Jersey. In April, we performed residency shows in Los Angeles and San Diego – where we played a total of eight shows. We were a touring L.A.-based band for a month and moving around the same way we do on the East Coast is much more difficult.

7. We Learned To Play Nicely With Other Bands

We played 16 dates with Pigeons Playing Ping Pong and Andy Frasco & The U.N. We learned a ton from both bands and how to jive while on tour with multiple crews. We learned how to scale our production efficiently to larger stages. Also, ripping a guitar solo on top of Frasco’s piano is something everyone should do.

8. The Cap Feels Like Our Second Home

We played two co-billed shows with Eggy at the legendary Capitol Theatre in New York. It was a dream come true and all of us are looking forward to the next time we link up! We had some really special jams come from that run… and Garcia’s is still our number two most played venue. Shoutout to Josh Cohen.

9. Roll With The Punches

You can go to sleep one night and the next thing you know you’re on the side of the road with a detached trailer and you have to deal with it to make it to the next city. The show must go on despite adverse circumstances.

10. Driving Yourself Around The Country Three Times Over Is More Stressful Than We Thought

We realized how big of a toll driving ourselves can take – we have a dedicated driver who has helped immensely. It let’s us focus more on the music and production rather than just getting to the venue.
