Pioneering jamtronica act The Disco Biscuits opened a two-night run featuring support from Karina Rykman last night at Higher Ground. Rykman collaborated with the quartet on “Feeling Twisted” at the Burlington, Vermont venue as part of a show that also featured Bisco’s first “Trooper McCue” performance since 2014.

The Disco Biscuits kicked off their first set with a lengthy version of instrumental “Uber Glue” that saw guitarist Jon Gutwillig front a build to a high-intensity peak. The four-piece then staged a “Confrontation” which enveloped both “Gangster” and “Shocked!” Next came the third performance of recently debuted original “Spaga’s Last Stand,” a song expected to land on the band’s forthcoming space-themed rock opera.

Bassist Marc Brownstein introduced Rykman to join in on the set-closing “Feeling Twisted,” noting it was her third show opening for the Disco Biscuits and prompting fans to arrive early for Karina’s support set tonight. Rykman played bass on the funky number sung by Barber. Last night’s “Feeling Twisted” featured a deep and ethereal jam.

Heater “Sweating Bullets” launched the Biscuits’ second set at Higher Ground. The song bled into the second version of “The Deal,” another tune from the space-themed rock opera, which gave way to a high-octane “M1.” Bisco kept the seamless run going with “Portal To An Empty Head” and then dusted off oldie “Trooper McCue” for its first play in 296 shows. The exploratory “Trooper McCue” bust out was followed by fan favorite “Morph Dusseldorf” to close the set. Last night’s show wrapped up with a “Catalyst” encore.

The Disco Biscuits return to Higher Ground tonight with Rykman back to open. Catch the Biscuits over the rest of the weekend in Albany, New York on Friday with Snakes and Stars and in Washington D.C. on Saturday with Philly-based band SNACKTIME supporting. Look for the SNACKTIME horn section to guest with Bisco at The Anthem.
