Tedeschi Trucks Band conducted their inaugural Sun, Sand & Soul event over the weekend in Miramar, Florida. Saturday saw Derek Trucks and Duane Betts swapping guest spots in their respective sets.
The trade-offs began when Trucks joined Duane Betts & Palmetto Motel for “Stare at the Sun.” The song appears on Duane Betts’ 2023 album, Wild & Precious Life. Trucks guests on the studio version as well and reprised his role at Sun, Sand & Soul with a particularly fluid flair on slide guitar.

In a social media post, Duane Betts noted that “Stare at the Sun’s” title is “something Derek said about my dad’s fearless approach to guitar playing and music in general.” Duane’s father and co-founding Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dickey Betts passed away on April 18. Tedeschi Trucks Band launched their set with the Allman Brothers-covered classic “Statesboro Blues.” The group then mixed songs from their latest LP I Am The Moon, the title track and “Yes We Will,” with older favorites “Do I Look Worried” and “Anyhow.”
Following a pair of covers from Chuck Willis (“I Feel So Bad”) and Aretha Franklin (“It Ain’t Fair”), TTB brought out Duane Betts for the ABB standout “Dreams.” Led by keyboardist Gabe Dixon, Duane Betts slow-boiled the first solo into a soaring affair before Trucks took over on slide. Susan Tedeschi then handled the next verse and chorus before Dixon brought the tune home.

The set came to a close with TTB offering their segment of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” and Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree” and finally original “I Want More” and Jeff Beck’s “Beck’s Bolero.”
The encore began with the Bonnie Raitt-recorded “I Can’t Make You Love Me” and I Am The Moon’s “Soul Sweet Song.” TTB then welcomed Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr for the Joe Cocker-covered “Space Captain” to end the encore.
