Dead & Company Welcomes Donna Jean Godchaux At Bonnaroo

The 15th annual installment of Bonnaroo ended on Sunday night at The Farm in Manchester, Tennessee with two sets of Dead & Company among the final performances of the weekend. Dead & Company had a big treat in store for festivalgoers as the band welcomed former Grateful Dead vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux for portions of both sets and the encore.

Guitarists Bob Weir and John Mayer, drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and bassist Oteil Burbridge opened their Bonnaroo performance with a jam they worked into “Truckin'” which eventually gave way to blues standard “Smokestack Lightning.” The Alabama-bred Godchaux, who was a member of the Grateful Dead for a large portion of the ’70s, made her first appearance of the night on “Bertha.” Donna stuck around for an extensively and impressively jammed “Playing In The Band” and a Mayer-led “Bird Song.” Dead & Company then played “Tennessee Jed” without their guest before Godchaux returned for “Shakedown Street” and the D&C debut of “Passenger” which segued into the end of “Bird Song.” Bobby and John alternated lead vocals on the “Casey Jones” that came next and ended the first set.

Dead & Company kicked off the second set with “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” but instead of transitioning into “Franklin’s,” they segued into “Scarlet Begonias.” Mayer and Chimenti shined through the entire segment as well as the “Fire On The Mountain” which followed and featured Donna Jean. “Terrapin Station” came next and contained contributions from Godchaux. The drummers then dove into a lengthy, livetronica-tinged “Drums.” Hart worked over the beam as “Space” began and eventually Mayer lit into a furious “The Other One.” It was then ballad time and Bobby did the honors of singing “Wharf Rat” ahead of the “Franklin’s Tower” second set closer featuring Donna Jean Godchaux. Donna was also on hand for the “Touch Of Grey” encore. Weir stepped to the mic after “Touch Of Grey” and urged attendees to vote out politicians who spew hatred. The tour continues on Thursday in Cincinnati.
