Dead & Company Welcome Zakir Hussain In San Francisco

Last night Dead & Company concluded a two-night stand at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in the city best associated with the Grateful Dead – San Francisco. Dead members Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir along with Jeff Chimenti, John Mayer and Oteil Burbridge welcomed an old friend and jammed into a pair of impromptu covers as part of Monday’s show.

The evening began with a strong version of “The Music Never Stopped” featuring a funky jam that eventually wound its way into an unplanned cover of The Temptations’ “Shakey Ground.” Burbridge showed off his slapping skills while the rest of the band showed they were game for the Weir-led tangent. Bobby also was up front for the “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo” that followed. Mayer took his turn leading the band on the tender “Candyman” before “Me & My Uncle” and “Tennessee Jed” picked the energy back up. A “Jack Straw” > “New Speedway Boogie” sequence then ended the set.

Set Two started with a pair of song suites in the form of “Lost Sailor” > “Saint Of Circumstance” and “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower.” The run’s second guest, percussionist Zakir Hussain, emerged during another wild “Drums” segment. Hussain has been a collaborator of Hart’s for decades. While Mickey, Billy and Zakir made the most of the Rhythm Devils’ massive rig, Burbridge hopped behind a drum kit for quadruple drummer action. A jam with hints of “Greatest Story Ever Told” that featured rapid-fire riffs from Mayer emerged out of “Space” before the band started “Looks Like Rain.” Jeff, Bobby and John shared vocal duties on “The Wheel” that followed with Mayer spouting lyrics from the doo-wop classic “Stay” at one point. Zakir Hussain then returned to help the band close out the second set with “Not Fade Away.” The six-piece finished the run with an emotional “Brokedown Palace” encore.

Dead & Company concludes the year with two shows at The Forum in L.A. starting tomorrow night.
