Dead & Company kicked off the fifth weekend of their Dead Forever Las Vegas Sphere residency on Thursday. Show 13 of 30 on June 13 saw the Grateful Dead offshoot treating the lucky audience to a debut of Bob Dylan‘s “I’ll Remember You” during the second set.
D&C — Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir and drummer Mickey Hart, guitarist John Mayer, bassist Oteil Burbridge, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and drummer Jay Lane — hit the ground running to kick off the concert with “Alabama Getaway,” with Mayer on lead vocals.
The vault was then cracked open and the band kept on “Truckin’” from Haight Ashbury to the stars. Bobby then led a sing-along during “Ramble On Rose” featuring the pyramid visuals followed by Mayer on lead vocals for the funky Dead classic “Mr. Charlie,” which boasted the billowing, psychedelic clouds.
“Jack Straw” in a rainy rainforest followed before “Big River” showcased the old-timey western “Ace” motif. The first set concluded with favorite “Althea,” with Mayer at the helm and framed by the Grateful Dead scrapbook.
The second set opened with an interesting sequence of “St. Stephen,” featuring the psychedelic wormhole and liquid light show visuals, “Scarlet Begonias” and “Franklin’s Tower.” Following “Stephen” > “Scarlet” > “Frank,” the band flowed into Traffic’s “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” tagged as usual with the “Hey Jude Reprise.”
“Drums” and “Space” came next from which emerged the Bob Dylan debut. “I’ll Remember You,” a Dylan song the Grateful Dead never covered, appears on the legendary singer-songwriter’s 1985 album Empire Burlesque. With the black and white visuals of the band overhead, Bobby led the way through the poignant ballad as the Sphere went pin-drop quiet save for some rousing moments from Weir. Chimenti shined on the tender tune with well-placed piano touches.
D&C then stoked the Sphere with “Fire on the Mountain,” featuring Oteil on lead vocals. A second set “Brown-Eyed Women” came next before the band brought things back down to earth with “Black Muddy River” only to ramp it back up again with closer “Not Fade Away.”
