Dawes served as the house band for an all-star “dreamset” devoted to the music of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers at the inaugural All In Music Festival on Sunday. Goose guitarist Rick Mitarotonda, vocalist Jenny Lewis, Matt Shultz of Cage The Elephant and John Oates were among those who joined Dawes at points of the dreamset at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis.

John Oates and Nicki Bluhm teamed with Dawes on “The Waiting” to open the tribute. Mitarotonda came out for the “You Got Lucky” that followed and stuck around for the remainder of the set as did Bluhm. Nicki and Rick were the featured guests on “You Don’t Know How It Feels,” while Mitarotonda was tapped to sing “American Girl” and shredded the song’s iconic end solo. The set continued with Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith handling lead vocals on “Yer So Bad” before Jenny Lewis and Goldsmith took on Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty’s roles respectively for “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.”

Jenny Lewis stuck around to helm the ensemble on “It’s Good To Be King.” Next, Shultz emerged with Cage The Elephant bandmate Daniel Tichenor on bass for “Breakdown.” Shultz and Tichenor also starred on a “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” that saw Duane Betts add more guitar to the mix. Duane Betts was on hand for the “Free Fallin'” finale featuring Taylor Goldsmith and Rick Mitarotonda trading verses and choruses in singing the beloved Petty classic.
