Mumford & Sons are on a roll having recently released Prizefighter, their second studio album in as many years. The members of the trio sat down with Anthony Mason to speak about the record, getting their mojo back, the challenge of losing a founding member, their Prizefighter Tour and more for a feature on CBS Mornings.

Prizefighter was recorded with The National's Aaron Dessner at his Long Pond Studio facility in New York State. Frontman Marcus Mumford called the follow-up to 2025’s Rushmere “the most Mumford & Sons album we’ve ever made.”

Marcus Mumford explained coming into the sessions the band was lacking self-confidence after they blew up quickly after the release of their debut album, Sigh No More, in 2009. “Our band’s kinda been on the backfoot for a while, creatively,” Mumford said. “Certainly live, you know, we went from pubs to clubs to theaters to arenas and then stadiums. And it happened really fast and suddenly we’re standing on stage at the Grammy’s winning Album Of The Year and it went over our heads, that whole period of time honestly, because it was really fast.”

Making Prizefighter with Dessner marked a turning point for the threesome. “There’s other records where you try on different clothes and that’s really fun to do,” Marcus Mumford said. “This one we took all our clothes off and we’re like, ‘All right, that’s it then.'”

The group also addressed the 2021 departure of founding member Winston Marshall. Mumford & Sons revealed they never questioned whether to continue but instead “were more curious” about how they would sound.

Mumford & Sons launch the biggest tour of their career on April 24 in Melbourne, Australia. The trek will bring them across Oceania, North America and Europe through October 8.
