Watch David Byrne, Kurt Vile, Steve Earle & Terry Allen Cover ‘Teach Your Children’ At John Henry’s Friends Benefit

Steve Earle hosted the 8th annual John Henry’s Friends Benefit concert at Town Hall in New York City on Monday night, with proceeds going toward The Keswell School for kids and young adults with autism where Earle’s son John Henry attends. Presented as a “guitar pull,” Earle was accompanied by David Byrne, Kurt Vile and Terry Allen for a cover of “Teach Your Children” and more.

Originally planned for December 2022, the benefit concert was rescheduled due to Byrne needing treatment for a medical situation. Byrne’s contributions to Monday’s concert included Talking Heads favorites “Heaven” and “(Nothing But) Flowers” as well as his solo collaboration with Allen, “Buck Naked.” Byrne also debuted a pair of new songs, “We Are Not” (playing banjo) and “Lullaby,” which we reportedly said were written for the soundtrack to an upcoming Roald Dahl feature film.

Monday’s guitar pull saw Vile and Byrne lead a performance of John Prine’s “How Lucky” and Vile and Allen link up on Townes Van Zandt’s “Loretta.” Among Steve Earle’s selections was “Harlem River Blues,” which was written by his late son Justin Townes Earle.
